Bangkok Bike Expo on 2-5 May 2013

bangkokbikeexpo2013

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), along with NCC Exhibition Organisers (NEO), is to organise the Bangkok Bike 2013 during 2-5 May 2013 at Hall 4, Impact Muang Thong Thani. The first exhibition of its kind in the country, it is designed to promote the use of bicycles for both recreational and regular use and enhance the popularity of cycling tours for both local and foreign visitors. It is expected to be attended by at least 170,000 people over the four-day period.

TAT sees huge potential for bike tours to attract both Thai and international tourists and support provincial communities and areas as well as tourism operators. According to the Thailand Cycling for Health Association, about 260,000 local people and expatriate residents of Thailand use bicycles for recreational travel and tours, but this can be increased by at least 20% with further marketing support and infrastructure development.

According to Mrs. Vilaiwan Twichasri Deputy Governor for Tourism Products and Business, “We are more than happy to jointly organise Bangkok Bike 2013 to tap the growing global popularity of travel by bicycle. Bangkok Bike 2013 is one way to stimulate the market by providing a one-stop-shop for interested consumers and businesses to get all the information they want, as well as exchange ideas on how to further grow the market.”

TAT and the organising team have provided a 500-square-metre area to accommodate bike riders under the theme of “Let’s Go Green.” The riders and general public will get information on six suggested bicycle routes covering five regions, be able to attend a seminar on bike tourism and meet with tour operators, hotels, resorts, local products, and One Tambon, One Product products.

According to Mrs Vilaiwan Twichasri “Travelling by bike fits in well with our Seven Greens concept which we launched a few years ago as part of our commitment to environmental sustainability. It also fits in well with the national focus on “Creative Tourism.” By increasing the number of cycling trips from once a year to 2-3 times a year, we can significantly grow the economic value of tourism while lowering the environmental impact. Bike tours also meet the national socio-economic development policy by distributing income more deeply into local communities and helping local businesses sell their home-made products.”

The most popular types of tours are day-trips, two-day tours, and to a lesser extent, one-week tours. TAT has supported cycling tours in the past but, due to infrastructure limitations, these have been confined to a few provinces; such as, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Lampang, Mae Hong Son, Nan, and Samut Songkhram. In addition, TAT has also published a guide book for bike travel. Future plans are to open more bike tour routes and tours across every province with proper bike path management to ensure safety and access to local community areas and beautiful scenery.”

Thai Society’s Top Tastiest Stories of the Year

  nytr_1

2012 has been full of tasty stories, but the Thai language newspaper Thai Rath has chosen Thai Society’s Top Ten Tastiest Stories of the Year. These are my favourite eight..

Superstars: Love lives (and especially Miss Tak ‘Bongkoj’)

This year innumerable Thai stars have tied the knot with their one and only sweetheart. They include Woonsen, Tai and Nathawut etc… Though not yet married, but engaged; special mention goes to Tak (Bongkoj Khongmalai). Miss Tak, 27, who is famed, alongside her huge pair of watermelons, for posing half nude for every magazine and newspaper publication in Thailand, got engaged to billionaire founder of Dtac. Even though her fiancé has almost reached retirement age, Tak claims that when she first met him, she didn’t realize who he was and how rich he was; she just simply fell in love at first sight. Thailand’s reporters and gossip-mongers, however, reckoned that Miss Tak had fallen in love with the sight of wallet and not his ageing wrinkles.

Technology: Iphone

Owning an Iphone has this year turned into an absolutely must for any trendy Thai. 30% of female Thai university students admitted in a poll that carrying an Iphone to university was the most important thing in their daily lives. Another 25% of Bangkok students said that they wouldn’t be seen dead on the skytrain using a mobile phone which was not an Iphone.

Unthinkable TV: Thailand’s Got Talent

Even though one can see plenty of bare breasts on Pattaya Beach or a Patpong go-go bar, such an eye-sore is totally unacceptable on Thai TV (according to the censors and Ministry of Culture that is). Unperturbed, Work Point Studio owners of Got Talent franchise, showed on-air, peak time, an audition of a female ‘artist’ who during her performance threw off her shirt and then her bra. Top Thailand Got Judge, Ms Benz ‘Pornchida’, threw a frenzy and ran out the studio while scolding the other two male judges who ‘passed’ the performance. Work Point were later fined 500,000 baht for daring to air the bare-breasted performance on Channel 3. TGT judge, and supermodel, Benz ‘Pornchida’ was, herself, soon after lambasted on Thai language Internet forums, as she herself had posed nude for body painting on past occasions.

Very Naughty: School Sex Clips

This year the Internet has been over-flowing with secretly taken clips of Thai students bonking all over the place. We have seen clips of Thai students doing it together in classrooms, teachers’ rooms, KFC toilets, cinemas and even at bus stops. Much of the blame for such naughty activity has been put on parents and other elders for not having taught their children that such a thing is unacceptable within Thai society. What is even more astounding is that the age of the kids in these sex clips keeps getting younger and younger.

Look Rich: Red Car License Plate

While many of Bangkok’s top single women are more in love with their Iphone than their mothers, Bangkok’s trendy young men have jumped on the red car license plate fashion. More than 20% of these red plate owners have admitted that they wouldn’t drive any other car. “A red plate means new car, means I got lots of money, and so easy to pick up hot girls” admitted Suttichai a third year Engineering student at Chulalongkorn University, whom before owning a red license, had only had one date in his entire life.

Politics: Obama Comes to Thailand (to the delight of PM Yingluck)

Swanky President Obama literally swept PM Yingluck off her feet with his warm charm, nice smile and hunky body. Photographs of the happy couple were posted all over the Internet, and especially the ones of Yingluck were she is almost watering at the mouth at the sight of Obama. “Prime Minister Yingluck is totally in love with Obama; her cheeks flush a bright red every time she looks in his eyes” claimed an anonymous source within her cabinet. It is yet to be seen whether Obama has the same feelings for Yingluck.

Sports: 2012 World Futsal Championship

No other sporting incident in recent memory has embarrassed Thailand’s sport’s lovers so much as the fiasco at Thailand’s hosting the 2012 World Futsal Championship. After spending tens of millions of dollars building an indoor stadium to host the finals, FIFA refused to give Thailand’s Futsal Association permission to use it for play. The association and Ministry of Sports were up-in-arms, however, FIFA were right in spotting that the stadium hadn’t actually been finished building. The government later ordered an inquiry into a possible corruption scandal.

Soap Opera: Raeng Ngao

No other TV soap opera has caused as much storm as this. Taking the censors to the limits, Raeng Ngao with its ‘18yrs+ only’ warning was the most loved (and loathed, especially by the authorities) soap opera of the year. See previous blog.

Nothing Much Has Changed

Ban Ta Klang Elephant Village

It’s 2013. The time when information is available at the tips of your fingers. The time when the world is so connected, whatever trends at one end of the world would catch on in the other in the matters of hours and days.

Not too long ago, a person I just met asked me just about all of the routine questions.

Her: So, what nationality are you?

Ding. Routine question #1.

Me: I’m Thai.

Her: From Taiwan?

Ding. #2

Me: No. Thais are from Thailand. Taiwanese are from Taiwan.

Her: Oh. So, Bangkok?

Me: (surprised, actually) Yes.

Her: Do you ride elephants?

Me: Yes. My dad only uses our rickshaw on the weekend.

Her: Really?

Me: No.

Sure, she skipped “What nationality is your husband? American?” and that “Oh she must’ve been a mail order bride and/or rescued prostitute” look that briefly registered on her face before moving on to, “So, how did you guys meet?”

True, she also skipped, “I LOVE Thai food! Pad Thai is my favorite!”

But it’s 2013. Six whole years after this incident.

Where to Celebrate Songkran 2013 in Bangkok

 songkranbangkok

The three main areas in Bangkok to celebrate Songkran and to get wet will most likely be Khao San Road (mainly foreigners), Silom Road (mainly Thai) and in front of Central World. There are also activities at many temples around the city and at Sanam Luang which are more traditional. I will update this page as and when news comes in. This is what I have so far:

  • On Friday 12th April at 8 a.m., the Phra Buddha Sihing will be moved from the Putthai Sawan Pavilion at the National Museum to be housed at a ceremonial site at City Hall. The Buddha image will be carried in a floral procession to arrive at City Hall about 7pm when the official opening ceremony, presided over by the Bangkok governor will start.
  • On Saturday 13th April, a ceremony to offer food to 186 monks during the morning alms round will begin at 8am with a ceremony to sprinkle scented lustral water on the palms of the elderly to pay respect to them on the Thai New Year.
  • From 12-15 April, there will be cultural performances and music shows at the City Hall Plaza. Local products from Bangkok’s 50 districts will be sold at the event.
  • From 12-15 April, the four-region Songkran fair will be held at Wat Pho, Wat Suthat Thepwararam, Wat Ratchaorasaram, and Wat Srakateratchaworamahaviharn.

On 21 April, the anniversary of the date of the setting of Rattanakosin’s foundation pillar, a special merit-making religious procession will take place to make merits for the city itself. The celebration will be hosted by the Culture Ministry together with Bangkok City Hall and the Crown Property Bureau.

WARNING: Mae Hong Son is Hazardous to your Health

Picturedg001

Every year we have newspaper stories about air pollution in the North of Thailand. It sounds crazy as you would normally go to the mountains for a holiday to get clean fresh air. But, the air quality in Bangkok today is actually a lot clearer than it is in Northern Thailand. The majority of the pollution is caused by forest fires and crop burning. Some years the haze is pretty bad and in Chiang Mai you might not be able to see Doi Suthep that overlooks the city. Of course, this is of concern not only to the locals but also to foreign tourists. What’s the point in going if you don’t have any views and you are being advised to stay indoors?

I got this email the other day from one concerned family:

My family and I are headed out to Thailand this Saturday. The
highlight of our trip was to be Chiang Mai and working with the
elephants. For unknown reasons, our travel agent never mentioned the
air quality issue and I still can’t get a straight answer from him.
Just curious if you know the current status? We will be in Chiang Mai
on Tuesday of next week. We definitely don’t want to travel
there and spend the money if we can’t be outside. Our kids are 10 and
12 years old.

It is really difficult to advise as the situation can change daily. But, I can say that Mae Hong Son Province has just broken this year’s records for the worst air pollution in Thailand. The PM10 today was an incredible 428 ug/cu m. This measurement is for dust particles smaller than 10 microns. Anything over 120 is bad for your health. Basically, people with heart or lung disease, older adults, and children should remain indoors. The general public should avoid prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors. So, if you are a tourist, I wouldn’t advise you to visit Mae Hong Son this week.

I’ve checked the PM10 for Chiang Mai today and the readings range from 139-174. Chiang Rai was 167-206. Lampang 145-207. Certainly not healthy but should be fine for a short holiday. I don’t think you will notice much, apart from the haze. I have been there at this time of year before. It’s not bad enough yet in Chiang Mai to cancel a holiday. But, to put all of this into perspective, Phaya Thai in Bangkok only had a PM10 of 30 today!

Be Careful of Robberies on Night Buses

20130320-090732.jpg

Over the years there have been many reports of people having things stolen from their bags on long distance buses in Thailand. Many of these go between Bangkok and southern destinations such as Samui and Phuket. On these buses, bags are stored in a special luggage compartment underneath the area where you sit. Seems to be safe as the only way you can access it is from an outside door. Right? Wrong! The bus assistants can enter the luggage compartment through a secret door from up front. So, while you sleep, they can take their time in rifling through your bags. This picture from today’s Bangkok Post shows a driver & his assistant re-enacting such a crime.
